This also fits with Maggie being some distance away when Paul was shot, perhaps they didn't know she was there or had left with Alex. I really struggle with the fact that Maggie apparently was not in Paul's immediate vicinity when the first shots were fired, if the intent was to kill both you'd expect them to be shot when close together.
